PARKER TWP — Their opponents might be wishing the
Butler girls bowlers had stayed off the lanes this season.
The squad already had wrapped up the WPIBL North Division title before defeating
Karns City 7-0 Wednesday at Bruin Lanes, moving the Golden Tornado's record to 9-0.
The
Butler boys defeated the Gremlins 5-2.
The girls' win was highlighted by Ashley Hevesy's 203 in the second game, which was six pins short of her season-best of 209.
"I work at Family Bowlaway, so I've been able to get a little bit of practice in despite the weather," said the junior.
It's the first year for scholastic bowling at Butler, but the team had high hopes all along.
"A lot of us grew up bowling," said Hevesy. "We were confident from the start of the season and knew everybody was going to work hard."
Butler senior Hope Griffith leads the North Division with a 188 average. She rolled a 337 series (166-171) Wednesday.
"I'm just out here to have fun," she said. "I am a little surprised I'm the best in average. There's a lot of good bowlers in our division."
Butler features five of the division's top eight girls bowlers, including Autumn Hepler (168), Hevesy (164) Nicole Balk (162) and Brea Suchonic (157).
"I really felt the girls would be successful because they keep their heads in the game," said Butler coach Bill Fay.
Karns City (0-8) was led by freshman Nikki Ferris, who managed a 135 and 126 for a 261 series.
Danielle Hepler added a 124 in the first game, which included three strikes in a four-frame span.

Ben Hoffman rolled a match-high 241 to key Butler's 971-861 win in the second game and it sparked the Tornado to the overall win.
Had Butler lost the second game, Karns City would have clinched the match after the Gremlins took Game One by a score of 766-751.
Hoffman rolled a 146 in the first game, but was in the groove thereafter, managing 10 of a possible 11 marks in Game Two.
"In the second game, my line came back to me," he said. "Confidence is very important. You have to step up there with a clear mind."
Butler (6-3) also received a 200-plus game from Derick Hahn, who rolled a 211 in the second game.
The KC boys (2-6) got their best showing out of Aaron Weckerly with the junior's 213 in the second game. He bowled a 153 to begin the day.
"I definitely could have done better in the first game, but I moved five boards to the right and made a move in Game Two."
Karns City is hoping to make up a postponed match against Mars before the season concludes.
"Our bowlers, boys and girls, I think they get a bit nervous when they're facing another team," said KC coach Denny Morrow. "They do really well in practice."
