BUTLER TWP - Film study pays off.
Butler varsity basketball coach Joe Lewandowski studied the film of Aliquippa's 87-35 win over Fox Chapel in the first round of the Butler Christmas Tournament.
"I saw that 30 of their points came on 15 lay-ups off transition," Lewandowski said. "Another 15 came on D'Von Jeter 3-pointers.
"If we could take those two things away, we could cut that point production to 45 points or so and make every possession important. That's what we wanted to do."
The Golden Tornado did exactly that Wednesday night in shocking the defending WPIAL Class AA champions, 64-49, in Butler's Christmas tournament title game.
The game was tied four times in the first half before Butler (7-4) took the lead for good on an Adam Monday trey with 1:16 left in the first half.
Butler led 30-26 at halftime and built that lead to 11 by the end of the third quarter. The margin peaked at 49-32 with 6:52 left in the game.
"They were really prepared and they played a great game," Aliquippa coach Marvin Emerson said. "They knew exactly what they wanted to do."
Jerrod Markle guarded Jeter most of the night and held him to six points. Jeter fouled out with 2:21 left. He had scored 21 points against Fox Chapel the night before.
"Jerrod has become a very good defensive basketball player," Lewandowski said. "He's the guy we use when we want to shut down an opposing scorer."
Herbert Pope, the Quips' 6-foot-10 sophomore center, scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, but no other Aliquippa player scored more than seven.
The Quips were out-rebounded, 33-27.
"We tried to go inside a little too much to try to get their inside people in foul trouble," Emerson said. "When that didn't work, we should have worked the perimeter more."
Aliquippa (7-4) had a six-game winning streak snapped by the loss.

Tournament MVP Blake Anderson led Butler with 20 points and added five assists. He scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, sinking eight of 10 free throws.
"Blake was the best guard on the floor," Lewandowski said. "We put the ball in his hands and he handled their pressure. That was the key to our controlling the tempo.
"We got our share of points in transition because our kids like to run and we knew they (Quips) would sell out over the top attacking our basket. Defensively, we were able to keep them in a half-court game."
Noah Hartung contributed 14 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for the Tornado. Nate Hartung had 11 points and five boards. Both made the all-tournament team.
"Controlling the pace of the game was critical for us," Anderson said. "We knew we couldn't give up fast-break points."
Fox Chapel 45, Burrell 42 -
The Foxes (5-7) rallied from an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Rob Tenenini scored 17 points off the bench and Tiph Harner had six of his team's 22 rebounds.
Dylan Grazier had 21 points and six of Burrell's 25 rebounds. Zack Ziemanski added 10 points for the Bucs (5-6).
Notes:
Grazier, Tenenini and Pope rounded out the all-tournament team. … Aliquippa's Jeter won the 3-point shooting contest with Butler's Anderson finishing second.
