LATROBE - Having not qualified for the WPIAL Class AAA team playoffs last
season, Butler's girls track and field team wanted to make sure when it came
back - it came back.
After Wednesday's team semifinals at Latrobe's Memorial Stadium, the squad
finds itself headed back to the WPIAL Championships.
The Tornado girls team defeated
"This was very nice. We talked about that in the locker room," said
"This year, we fixed the holes and the team is together. There's a team
concept. We're back to running Butler track and field," he added.
The news was not so good for the boys team, which also returned to the team
playoffs after a one-year hiatus. The Tornado routed Laurel Highlands 107-38
but dropped an 89-61 decision to Latrobe.
In both hurdles sprints, the Tornado were out-pointed by the Wildcats 48-5,
which included the 100, 200, 400, the 400 relay and 1,600 relay.
"We were able to make some of it up, but they had a little more depth than
we did in getting it done," said Butler boys coach Rick Schontz.
The girls squad was led by Hannah Rekich, Kendall Butch and Tara Maxwell, all
of whom won two individual events.
Rekich won the 100 hurdles (16.8 seconds) and 300 hurdles (50.2), Butch the
high jump (5-2) and triple jump (36-2) and Maxwell the shot put (38 feet, ½
inch) and discus (114-5).
Amanda Malecky was Butler's other overall winner in the 800 (2:31.2) as was the
3,200 relay team of Amanda Bresnehan, Tess Crispin, Abby Herrit and Malecky
(9:51.9).
Other key performances included a personal best by Jessica Tomsey in the 1,600
(5:39.8), Laura Ankrom's third-place finish in the shot put to give Butler a
sweep (Amy Achesinski was second), Lea Renwick bouncing back from a season-long
injury to get key second and third-place finishes in the sprints and Lyndsy Day
finishing second in the long jump.
The 400 relay, running as a unit for the first time this season, finished in
52.0, second overall.
"We struggled all season and had girls in and out," said Harris.
"Lea was hurt, but we finally had all four in for the first time. That's
very promising going into the playoffs."
In the boys meet, Butler started off on the right foot with a win in the 3,200
relay (Josh Cable, Chris Henry, John Strutt and James Rogerson) with a time of
8:29.8.
Strutt also won the 800 (2:01.0) and was joined by Rob Miller in the 1,600
(4:40.5); Bob Alexander in the triple jump (41-9), Brian McCandless in the high
jump (6-1) and Junior Dunn in the javelin (169-10), which he won on his final
throw.
Rogerson also pulled out a couple of second places overall in the 1,600 and
3,200.
"We were able to have some nice surprises, like Marcus Hough in the shot
put (48-2, second overall)," said Schontz. "Our middle distance and
distance did a great job for us.
"Greater Latrobe is a great team. We knew it would be close."
