Tornado get it done

BALDWIN — Butler boys track and field coach Rick Schontz likes to keep things nice and simple.
In Wednesday's WPIAL Class AAA team semifinals,
Butler defeated Canon-McMillan 82-68, West Allegheny 95-55 and Trinity 98-52 at Baldwin High School.
Butler didn't win a throwing event, but it captured at least one second place in all three against Canon-McMillan and second and third places against both Trinity and West Allegheny.
The Tornado also crossed the line first in the 1,600 relay, but a uniform infraction negated the five points and made the final score against the Big Macs closer than it appeared.
But Schontz kept things basic.
"In dual meets, it's all about beating the other guy," said Schontz. "Just score points, and our kids worked hard and performed well."
The wins advance the Tornado (8-0) to the championship meet next Thursday at
West Mifflin, where they will face North Allegheny, Gateway and Hempfield.
Logan Renwick spearheaded the Tornado win with four individual victories. Renwick won the 110 hurdles (15.5 seconds), 300 hurdles (39.95) and the long (21-1Z\x) and triple (44 feet, Z\v inch) jumps.
Other overall winners included Nathan Neff in the 800 (2:02.31), Darius Hightower in the (23.06) and the 3,200 relay squad of Lance Dugger, Evan Gomez, Ben Porter and Neff (8:09.04).
Still, Schontz was impressed with some other second- and third-place performances that made a huge difference.
"Adam Marzullo was big in the pole vault (second place), and Spencer Murray, a freshman, was second in the triple jump and we went 1-3 in the 800 (both against CM). We had a couple of guys PR in the discus.
"Matt Pribis was second in the 300 hurdles and Matt Rekich was third (for a Tornado sweep)," Schontz added.
