BUTLER TWP — In Butler's section wrestling match against Hampton Wednesday, the Talbots took the first bout of the evening.
The Tornado, however, took it from there.
Trailing 4-0,
Butler reeled off seven consecutive weight classes, taking a commanding 34-4 lead en route to a 47-17 victory.
"We were a little lethargic tonight," Tornado coach Scott Stoner said. "We're not the team I thought we'd be yet. I think we can get a lot better."
"I thought we could win five bouts," said
Hampton coach Joe Bursick, whose team captured four. "We certainly have some weak spots. You just can't give up six points against Butler."
Kevin Synan started off the match with a 9-1 major decision over the Tornado's Cody Hartman at 135 pounds. Hartman had entered the match with a 6-0 mark.
"Cody wrestled dead," said Stoner. "He's been wrestling like a phenom. He's been go go, go, but tonight, he didn't have a lot of energy."
The Tornado (7-0, 1-0) bounced back with their string of wins to take control.
After Eric Tuck (140) took a 3-0 decision over the Talbots' Ryan Craig, Mike Crawford (145), Matt Pribis (160), Cole Baxter (171) and Chris White (215) recorded pins to help Butler build a 30-point lead.
Dakoda Collins (152) earned an 11-2 major decision and Mike Scialabba (189) added a 5-3 decision during the run.
"Eric Tuck was probably the biggest win," said Stoner. "To get points and hang on, against one of the Craigs, was big. (Craig) is a top 10 ranked wrestler."
Baxter, who won the WPIAL Class AAA championship at 145 pounds, has continued to do well, although Stoner is unsure how much longer he'll stay there.
"Cole's ranked third at 171 and there were a couple of really good wrestlers there last year that are back and they're athletic," said Stoner.
The Talbots' Nick Yaroszewski stopped the Tornado run with an 11-0 major decision over Tim Fulks at 275.
Blake Caudill at 103 responded with a pin in 46 seconds over Zach Daugherty.
"Blake has all kinds of energy," said Stoner. "We're expecting big things from him. He's not wrestled anyone yet that has challenged him yet."
Hampton's Zach Kocak pickled up a 6-2 decision over Nick Sutton, then Butler's Brandon Bauer earned a 9-0 major decision and Zach Reges a 5-2 decision — erasing a 2-0 deficit entering the third period — as the Tornado opened up a 47-11 lead.
Hampton's Pete Craig closed out the match with a pin against Zach Collins at 130.
"We have nine freshmen and seven of them wrestled tonight," said Bursick. "We have some injuries. Both our heavyweights are out. We have to deal with adversity and just keep trying to make progress."
Notes: Baxter, Caudill, Crawford, Scialabba and White all improved to 7-0 while Sutton and Hartman fell to 6-1 ... Butler returns to the mat at the Brockway Tournament, which will be held Dec. 28-29. "That's two full days of wrestling," said Stoner. "Some kids might get as many as nine matches in."
